The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi owns three tribal casinos in Michigan, and all three introduced live sportsbooks in July 2020. The Four Winds Casino properties in New Buffalo, Hartford, and Dowagiac all offer a Four Winds Sportsbook.

The New Buffalo location offers 18 betting kiosks, with the Hartford and Dowagiac sportsbooks containing six kiosks each. All Four Winds Sportsbook locations also offer an app that allows bettors to select bets remotely, then scan a QR code at the sportsbook to complete the bet.

The app is powered by gambling technology powerhouse Kambi Group. The Four Winds-Kambi collaboration will also eventually launch an online sportsbook.

Kambi operates 888 Sport and Casino as well as Unibet Sportsbook and Casino, both of which are already available in Indiana and New Jersey. Unibet is also in Pennsylvania. So it’s expected that 888 Sport Michigan, Unibet Sportsbook Michigan, or both will be available sometime in 2021.

June 22, 2020, marked a historic date in Michigan’s tribal casino industry, as FireKeepers Casino & Hotel became the first tribal property to open a live sportsbook.

Dacey’s Sportsbook went live as a collaboration between the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi, which owns the casino, and technology brand Scientific Games. That agreement will also launch an online sportsbook under the FireKeepers Casino & Hotel license, which is expected sometime in 2021.

The live sportsbook features three live betting windows and four self-service kiosks. Located in Battle Creek, the casino also offers 2,900 slots and 76 table games.

It was also named “The Best Overall Sportsbook” by Casino Play Magazine, with a huge draft beer selection, well-regarded food, and a fun atmosphere.

Stage 131 Sportsbook & Lounge At Gun Lake Casino

Gun Lake Casino’s sports betting plans include both retail and online sportsbooks. The on-property live sportsbook, called Stage 131 Sportsbook & Lounge, opened Oct. 3. The venue added retail sports betting to the amenities at the property, located in Wayland.

The casino, owned by the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians of Michigan, will also eventually offer an online sportsbook as well. Both the live and the online sports betting products will operate in partnership with Parx Casino.

The addition of Stage 131 Sportsbook adds to a casino floor that already includes more than 2,000 slot machines, 47 table games, and a live poker room.

Michigan Casinos Without Retail Sports Betting

Six of Michigan’s 26 casinos do not have sports betting. These include:

• Kings Club Casino in Bay Mills Township, MI
• Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt. Pleasant, MI
• Saganing Eagles Landing Casino & Hotel in Standish, MI
• Ojibwa Casino in Marquette, MI
• Ojibwa Casino in Baraga, MI
• Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet, MI

That’s not to say these casinos won’t offer sports betting in the future, but it is currently unavailable in retail form at these five locations. In fact, we personally called guest services at the Ojibwa Casino (Golden Nugget Online Casino) and Northern Water Casino (PointsBet Online Sportsbook) and confirmed that betting kiosks are on the way.

However, you can bet on sports using a Michigan sportsbook app while you’re on any of these properties. To wager on sports online, you need to be at least 21 years old and within state lines.

Legal Sports Betting In Michigan

The state’s 23 tribal and three commercial casinos can enter into partnerships with gaming technology companies to launch both live and mobile sports betting as well as online casinos and multiplayer poker platformers.

The first of Michigan’s live sportsbooks began to launch in March 2020. Since then, 20 retail sportsbook locations have opened across the state.

The first of Michigan’s online sportsbooks launched on January 22, 2021. While ten Michigan online sportsbook apps launched on that day, at least a few more are expected to be added to the list of options throughout 2021, particularly FOX Bet.

What Sports Can I Bet On In Michigan?

Virtually all major domestic sports leagues should appear on the betting menus at Michigan’s live sportsbooks. Leagues including NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, NASCAR, UFC, PGA, and many others offer Michigan bettors the chance to bet on beloved US sports teams and athletes.

College sports present even more wagering opportunities. The Lawful Sports Betting Act places no restrictions on college sports betting, meaning open betting on big-time programs like the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.

Moneyline

Moneyline bets function as the most simple and time-tested way to bet on sports. This kind of bet involves picking which team will win a game, with no point spread involved. Each team pays out at different odds, with underdogs paying out at better odds than favorites.

Point Spread

Point spread bets even the odds between favorite and underdog, by adding points to an underdog’s final score or subtracting from the favorite. Point Spread betting functions as the most popular way to bet on sports in the US.

Futures

A futures bet wagers on an event that takes longer than a single game. Many futures bets focus on accolades determined at the end of a sports season. Possible futures bets could include wagers on what team will win the Super Bowl, or what player will win the NBA Rookie of the Year award.

Prop Bets

NFL

The NFL reigns supreme as the most popular league among sports bettors in the US. The 16-game regular-season schedule begins in September, with 32 teams vying for the postseason.

Is It Legal To Bet On Sports Outside Of Legal Sportsbooks In Michigan?

All of the sportsbooks operating from Michigan’s tribal and commercial casinos operate legally. Live sportsbooks function as on-property amenities to the casinos in which they’re located.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) regulates the state’s commercial casinos, while the National Indian Gaming Commission provides oversight for Michigan’s tribal casinos.

Online sportsbooks operate as extensions of both commercially-owned and tribally-owned retail casinos, but all online betting falls under the regulatory purview of the MGCB.

Sportsbooks not offered as official products of Michigan’s regulated casinos are operating illegally. Betting on sports through any site or broker not regulated by Michigan’s gaming oversight agencies represents an illegal activity.
